The Maharashtra Forest Department is all set to translocate eight tigers from Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) or you can say Tadoba National Park to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) soon. This translocation is taking place to promote the conservation of tigers in the forests of the Northern Western Ghats. It is being said that three male tigers and five female tigresses will be relocated to the northern western ghats.

The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve

The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) is one of only five tiger reserves in the country with zero tigers within the reserve, the other 4 tiger reserves are Kaval in Telangana, Kamlang in Arunachal Pradesh, Dampa in Mizoram, and Satkosia in Odisha. The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve is spread over 4 districts of western Maharashtra – Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Ratnagiri. This huge Tiger Reserve covers a large area of 1,1655 sq km and it was notified back in 2010 by uniting the Chandoli National Park and Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary.

About Translocation of Tiger

The forest department is ready from their side to initiate the relocation project and they are waiting to get a response from the Union Environment Ministry. We would like to tell you that the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) cleared the translocation plan back in October 2023, they said that in the initial phase, a male tiger or a pair of male and female tigers would be translocated from Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve STR. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests – Maheep Gupta said, “Once we have the permission to tranquilize the tigers under Section 12 of the Wildlife Protection Act, we will go ahead with the fieldwork. We have created a special vehicle to transport the big cats. The vehicle will be fitted with misting provisions,”

The translocation is a part of the long-term plan to restore the population of tigers in the northern western ghats forests.  This translocation will form a key wildlife corridor between Maharashtra and Karnataka. According to the government’s All India Tiger Estimation report, this translocation corridor will allow connectivity of the tiger population in Sahyadri Reserve, Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, Amboli Reserve forest, Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa and Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary and Kali Tiger Reserve in Karnataka.

After the translocation of Tigers from Tadoba, it will be followed by their translocation from the Pench Tiger Reserve which is spread over a large area of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Once all the tigers are translocated safely, the forest department will monitor the movement of released tigers in Western Ghats and more such translocations will take place after the success of these eight tigers.

Conclusion

This translocation is an important part of tiger conservation. But do not think that due to this translocation, there will be a shortage of tigers in Tadoba National Park. There are many tigers in Tadoba National Park and you can see them by taking your safari. You can choose a gypsy or canter safari to go deep inside the park. Make your Tadoba Safari Booking and enjoy the thrill of watching these big wild cats in their natural habitat.
